Today (15th August 2021) India celebrating its 75th independence day, India got its freedom from the centuries-old Colonial rule on 15 August 1947. The fight to gain our Independence was long, difficult, and cost many brave lives.

Jawaharlal Nehru declared India's independence on August 15, 1947, and swore in as the 1st Indian Prime Minister. The British House of Commons passed the Indian Independence Bill on July 4, 1947, and it was passed within a fortnight.

This was a major part of the process that led India to her victory. Freedom fighters and patriots like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rani Lakshmi Bai, and many more lead the common people with their belief and determination to win independence.

Facts about India's Independence Day

1. Jawaharlal Nehru’s first speech on Independence Day began with, “At the stroke of midnight, when the world sleeps, India shall awake to life and freedom...”

2. Rabindranath Tagore composed ‘Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata’ which then later was renamed ‘Jana Gana Mana’ and was adopted as the national anthem by the Constituent Assembly of India.

3. The Indian flag is only manufactured and supplied from The Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS), located in Dharwad in Karnataka. It has the sole authority to manufacture and supply the Indian national flag and the flag is hand-spun and handwoven cotton khadi wafting.

India enters into 75th year of independence from the British colonial rule this 2021. August 15th of every year is marked as a remembrance of how our country struggled for freedom and honors all those freedom fighters because of whom we are a free nation today. So let us tell you that India became independent on July 18, 1947, but Lord Mountbatten declared 15th August as the date of Independence because this date observed the second anniversary of the surrendering of Japan to the Allied Forces during World War II.
  3. There was no president or prime minister heading the country. Independent India lacked in having a structured government. The Governor-General was the only and the most authoritative person in India at the time of independence and the political framework developed much later when India became a republic.
  4. Now you would be surprised to know that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, hoisted the national flag 17 times from the fortification of the Red Fort on Independence Day.
  5. Last but not the least, India shares its Independence Day with five more countries, Bahrain, North Korea, South Korea, Congo, and Liechtenstein on August 15, but with different years.
