Have you ever wondered how did this happen?

How just being a tiny fishing village turned into an Urban miracle world of the future, and today's it's the world's biggest financial and business hub.

Fasten your seat belt, and Let's dig into the history of Dubai.

Dubai
Dubai

Dubai was the crossing point between east and west, with inhuman climate, temperature reaching up to 50°c, this was the major reason the development was not happening for ages.

 And,

Britishers were least interested in developing Dubai, on other hand, they were hugely investing in Bombay (Mumbai) India.

So in 1900, the Dubai rulers announced a taxes agreement; which means no tax will be collected from the traders, this boosted Indian and Persian traders and more footfall started happening.

Soon Dubai became the biggest trading hub on the Persian Gulf, In the early 20th century, it also became a big center of pearl driving.

This was just the start, the table is just about to turn, when......

When Shaikh Rashid Al Maktoum Dubai ruler in 1956 went touring around Europe and was greatly inspired by European cities, particularly LONDON

He was so fascinated by the urban design, transport system, comfortable, convenience, that London has to offer, he build up a vision, a vision on which no one can believe in that era, which was almost next to impossible.

Turning a Dessert, inhuman city into an International city!

In 1961, he was instructed to make a Dubai creek broader so the bigger trading ships could sail into the city, under his guidance city started rebuilding with stone and cement.

These were the small steps, which he was taking to achieve his main goal of turning Dubai into an international city.

He started building an international airport, but soon they started finding challenges when their investors started doubting and finding these projects unnecessary, and funding was also becoming hard,

 But,

In 1966! Dubai hit a “Jackpot” Yes, it was oil,

Dubai, oil

In 1966 oil was found in Dubai, but compared to other neighbors cities, the oil found in Dubai was moderate compare to their neighborhood city, Where Abu-Dhabi had 10 times more oil than Dubai

Shaikh Raseed was aware these limitless resources were a blessing to the city, but he wanted to make Dubai a city that shouldn’t be depending on oil. His vision was to build the most urban city, the city which should be attracted by all nationalities, and to become the first choice of business around the world.

So he started inviting the most talented architect, engineers,s, and entrepreneurs to Dubai, his biggest inspiration was London, he hired a team of British experts to help him further in achieving his vision.

So Dubai started developing the grand projects, so Sheikh Rashid instructed to build a skyscraper, and in 1979 they build 39 story building named Dubai World Trade Center and officially opened for business.

This skyscraper was not be appealed to by the world media, and 100 story buildings already existed, international media was ridiculing the city’s grand investment, but Sheikh Rashid was convinced that soon will be taken seriously by Dubai Media.

But, unfortunately, he never saw the city reach its full glory, he passed away in 1989, but his foundation was carried by his son 31-year-old Mohammed Al Maktoum.

Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, was clear that he wanted to make Dubai, the biggest and tallest, and in 2000, he introduced Emirates Towers which were higher than any building in Europe at the time, but

But this was not enough, he wanted to build the tallest building in the world, and here the “BURJ KHALIFA” journey started.

In 2010, they completed the construction of Burj Khalifa the highest skyscraper in the world, with he also started focusing on the aviation industry.

Dubai International Airport

After the completion of “Emirates Airline International Airport” Soon it started becoming a gateway to Dubai for thousands of tourists, entrepreneurs, and investors who were curious to visit the new marvel of the middle east.

In 2002, Sheikh Mohammed allowed foreigners to own land in Dubai, which quickly turned the city into one of the biggest real estate markets.

Being a city free of taxes and restrictions, Dubai become a gigantic construction site and billionaires around the world started investing here.

Sheikh Mohammed also had another ambitious project, he wanted to turn Dubai into a world financial center, competing with major financial capitals like New York and London.

And, soon Dubai international Financial Center was created, a special economic zone covering 110 hectares, with its law and regulation.

Soon 95% of the population were foreigners around the world here in Dubai, this impacted globally and a new truly international city was born.

But, with this rapid growth, Dubai has also faced much criticism, for example, the Washington Post once stated that; (Dubai in an attempt to be a successful Arabic city had to sacrifice all its Arabic features) despite all this Dubai managed to stand out from the world and become an inspiration for many other developing cities around the world today.
